Windows Tips:(tips are added periodically)

1. Run older programs in XP
2. Get all of the information about your computer such as its name, OS, disk sizes, and anything about the hardware or components
3. Customize which programs begin at startup

1. XP tip-Run older programs in XP-in order to run your older windows programs that ran on previous versions of windows and do not work on XP. Install your program:
To Perform:
right click on the program->
go to properties->
click on the compatibility tab
select the version of windows that your program ran on and click ok

2. Get all of the information about your computer such as its name, OS, disk sizes, and anything about the hardware or components by:
go to start->
click run->
type msinfo32

3. Customize which programs begin at startup: go to start->run and type in msconfig

4. XP tip: to start in safe mode: hold F8 while computer boots up

5. take a screen shot by pressing Print Scrn SysRq(located on the right of the keyboard next to scroll lock and pause) then go into a paint program and and paste(ctrl+v) your image into it.

6. XP tip: connect xp firewall by going to
start->
programs->
Accessories->
Communications->
Network Setup Wizard and select: yes, turn on ICF.

7. XP tip: access an on-screen keyboard go to
start->
programs->
accessories->
accessibility->
on-screen keyboard

8. Make your monitor and hard disk turn off or go into system standby after a time period of your choice:
start->
settings->
control panel- and select power options, this will allow you to control the power of your system by giving you the option of when and how to turn off your computer disk and monitor.

9. Hide your folders and files-
To Perform:
right click on the file and select properties->
choose the hidden option at the bottom of the pop up box and then click apply and close it

10. To view your hidden files and folders:
open up any folder->
select tools from the top menu->
select folder options->
select the view tab->
scroll down until you see a check box to hide selected folders, you can now check and uncheck this as you please to hide or unhide folders and files.

11. XP tip: Use classic windows desktop instead of xp's default
To Perform:
right click and choose properties->

click the appearance tab->
under windows and buttons choose windows classic style and click ok

12. Identify your running tasks:
To Perform:
press ctrl+alt+delete and look and applications

13. Perform windows update
To Perform:
click on start
scroll up to windows update
install critical updates

14. Get rid of unwanted desktop icons that won't seem to erase:
To perform:
right click on the icon
select properties
select hidden and ok

15. Are all of the icons on your desktop neccessary:
if an icon has a little white box with an arrow in it, it is a shortcut and can be deleted. This will in no way affect your program.

16. Change your mouse properties such as the pointer, its speed, its shape, if you want it to have a tail, and much more.
To Perform:
go to start->
settings->
Control panel->
mouse

17. Change your computers name. First go into your control panel by clicking start->settings->control panel

Next click on system. Then select the computer name tab and give your computer a name. This name is how your computer is recognized on a network.
